 Writers for 2009 Nationals
« Result #1 on Jul 30, 2009, 11:44pm »

I need writers to help cover the Solo Nationals for SportsCar. If you’re the type of person who likes to weigh in on these forums, you may be just the one we need.
I need about two dozen writers to cover the event. Ideally, we want people who will be there all four days -- Tuesday-Wednesday drivers cover Thursday-Friday classes and Thursday-Friday drivers cover Tuesday-Wednesday classes [See Run Days list at bottom of this message].
The perks are:
1-This counts as your work assignment,
2-You do most of it sitting in the stands or chatting with other drivers, and
3-You do NOT have to work on the days you run (if you’re there all four days).
The necessaries are:
1-I prefer people who are there all four days (enabling #3 above), but I can use some same-day people -- it depends what heat you end up running. I do NOT assign conflicts.
2-You have to get stories back to me within about 10 days.
You do NOT need polished writing ability. Rather, we need people who are good observers and, yes, even good bench racers.
No one should have to write up more than two classes or cover classes in more than two heats (Open and Ladies are considered one class for story purposes). The basic job is to be there when the classes are running, talk to a couple of the key players, then write a story (likely after you get home) of about 500 words.
You e-mail it to me, I do the editing and fact checking, and perhaps plug in some historical perspective, and send it to the magazine. I also take care of preparing all results for publication, so you do not have to worry about that.
Great writing talent is secondary to just being there. I can edit most anything into a reasonable narrative, but I need the details of the story so the eyes and ears of the reporters are invaluable. This is like the good old days of hot-lead journalism -- you're the ace reporter, I'm the invisible "rewrite” guy. I’ll send you a brief "how-to" with the story assignments, which come out after the run order is announced.
If you can be part of the crew this year, please send me a direct e-mail (rocky@spitfire4.com) telling me:
1. Your name
2. Mailing address
3. Phone numbers (home, work, cell)
4. e-mail address
5. Your Social Security Number *
6. Your class, days you run [see schedule below]
7. What day you plan to arrive/leave Topeka
8. Where you plan to stay in Topeka (motel, etc.)
9. Any preferences for classes you'd like to cover
10. Second choice for event work assignment in case I can't use you as a writer.
(* A California requirement, SportsCar is published in California.)
If you enter using the entry form in SportsCar or the flyer mailed from SCCA, in the “Worker Information” area circle “OTHER” and write in "SportsCar." If registering online at the SCCA.com website, leave the “Work Preference” line blank and at the bottom of the page in “Notes to registrar” write in “Work Preference - SportsCar Writer.”
If you've already sent your entry and checked off some other worker preference, just let me know what you checked. I can get it changed.
Hope to hear from you soon!

 SEDIV Championship Event, August 1-2 @ SGMP
« Result #3 on Jul 16, 2009, 1:16pm »

Calling all SEDIV members! Come one, come all to the SEDIV Winner Take All Championship Event at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Cecil, GA on August 1 and 2, 2009. Due to event cancellations, this event is a winner take all championship. The Class Champions will be receiving SEDIV Championship jackets at the Area 3 meeting in Jekyll Island, GA in early 2010. The event will be run in a National Tour style format meaning 2 days of competition with a different course for Saturday and Sunday. The difference will be that we will have a minimum of 4 runs per day.

Hopefully you have noticed that the entry fees went down this year. This is due to Tire Rack sponsoring our event at SGMP. I have also been talking with tire manufacturing companies who may be interested in providing contingency programs next year if we can get our participations levels up. Let’s show our support for Tire Rack to keep them on board with the Divisional Program!

Please register ASAP for this event at www.motorsportsreg.com.

I look forward to seeing you in August!

So basically points for the event at ACU-4 mean nothing?

Cash has been tight this year, thinking that spending the money to go to ACU-4 and then having the results mean nothing will be very upsetting.

You could treat each day at SGMP as separate events and therefore still have a best two out of three championship.

What does that mean for the two event minimum, has that been removed? Thanks...

Mike,
That is so good to hear. Now we don't have to go off site for lunch.
Please post this on all the solo boards around the SEDIV.

Thanks Jim! I've been distracted since I sent this to you.

I think we will have a barbecue vendor onsite for Sat/Sun. We had sandwiches from them last weekend that were sooo goood.

 Hotels for SEDIV #2 @ Huntsville
« Result #10 on May 8, 2009, 1:20pm »

In addition to Hilton Garden Inn on Governor's House Road, here is the list of some hotels recommended by Mike Cavanaugh.
Mike says that people like the Holidy Inn on Williams Avenue -

Holiday Inn, 401 Williams Ave SW, Huntsville, AL - (256) 533-1400;
Embassy Suites, 800 Monroe Street, Huntsville, AL - (256) 539-7373 - This is about 2 years old;
Marriott Hotel, 5 Tranquility Base, Huntsville, AL - (256) 830-2222 (Space Center) might be pricey;
Holiday Inn, 903 University Dr. Huntsville, AL 35806 (877) 863-4780;
Hampton Inn, 4815 University Drive, Huntsville, AL 35816 (256) 830-9400

Hope that this helps,
Jim
